The lecture will survey the medieval history of the continuous (as opposed to lectionary) text of the Greek Gospels. It will focus more closely on a homogeneous and large group of manuscripts called “Revised Koine,” “Kr,” or “Family 35,” examining the historical circumstances under which it was produced and disseminated during the fourteenth century.

Georgi Parpulov studied history at the University of Sofia and art history at the University of Chicago. He did curatorial work at the Walters Art Museum and the British Museum, and taught at the University of Oxford. He is now preparing a union catalogue of commentary manuscripts of the Greek New Testament under the auspices of CATENA, a ERC-funded research project at the University of Birmingham. He edited for publication Kondakov's History of Byzantine Art (2012) and the Slavonic Patria of Mount Athos (2013) and wrote, among other things, Toward a History of Byzantine Psalters ca. 850-1350 AD (2014) and Middle-Byzantine Evangelist Portraits (forthcoming 2020).
