Welcome to CEU’s Department of Medieval Studies!

The Department of Medieval Studies provides intellectually challenging comparative and multi-disciplinary postgraduate education on all aspects of the history and culture of the period between c.300 and c.1600. Our growing international prestige and wide network of alumni/ae testify to our successful work past and present. The department is part of the recently established CEU School of Historical and Interdisciplinary Studies, which brings together related teaching units – next to our department the Department of History, the Nationalism Studies Program, the Religious Studies Program plus the newly established Source Language Teaching Group – and research centers – Eastern Mediterranean Studies, Pasts, Inc., Open Society Archives – to strengthen CEU’s commitment to interdisciplinarity and the link between teaching and research.

The Department currently offers three internationally recognized degree programs:

The Department provides an inspiring and dynamic research environment and a culturally diverse, friendly and close-knit social community. With a faculty/student ratio of 3:1, we offer intensive and individually tailored supervision that is mindful of the theoretical, methodological, and linguistic requirements of each student's research project.

An MA in Medieval Studies from CEU will prepare you for the best doctoral schools in the world, where some of our alumni are currently pursuing their postgraduate careers (please take a moment to browse our placement stats). At the same time, our PhD graduates have gone on to assume leading positions in regional academia, or win highly competitive postdoctoral fellowships in international research centres in preparation for an international career. Financial support is available for both MA and PhD applicants.

In order to allow our students to focus on those aspects of late antique, medieval, and early modern history closest to their interests, we invite successful MA and PhD applicants to join one of four departmental core areas in research and teaching.  At the same time, however, students are encouraged to attend lectures and classes from other fields that would enrich their academic experience at CEU.

On average, the Department accepts about twenty MA and six PhD students per academic year into its striving and highly international community.
