Turkologentag 2023

The 29th International Congress of DAVO will take place in cooperation with the “Turkologentag 2023 – Fourth European Convention on Turkic, Ottoman and Turkish Studies“ in the University of Vienna on 21-23 September 2023. Faculty and students from our department will present papers on a wide variety of topics.

On Thursday 21 September, PhD students Cankat Kaplan (together with Hasan Karataş), János Galamb, and Karolina Anna Kotus will talk on, respectively, Deconstructing İcazetnames: The Rise and Fall of the Suhrawardi Heritage in the Formation and Periodization of Ottoman Sufism, Canons of hadith in the training of the 15th and 16th-century Ottoman Rumi ilmiyeand the Embassy of Ottoman Christian ambassador Thomas Kantakouzenos to Moscow in 1627. Brett Wilson, Director of CEU's Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies (CEMS) will explore Bektashi Lodges in the Turkish Republic (1923-1964): Confiscation, Neglect, and Museumization.

The following day (Friday 22 September), our PhD student Mariya Mihaylova Kiprovska will give her paper on Frontier Lords as Intermediaries between the Ottoman State and its Christian Neighbors, and Brett Wilson will chair sessions on "Studies on Sufism in Perspective" and "Late Ottoman Culture and Debates on Religion".

Finally, on Saturday 23 September, our MA student Rana Bayram will talk on Avrupa Seyahati Hatırası (1916-1919): An Elite Ottoman Woman's Travels through Europe during the Great War.
