Core Areas

The Department of Medieval Studies currently offers four core areas of research and teaching:

• I—Western, Eastern and Central European History of the Middle Ages – catering for the political and cultural history of the 'Latin' Middle Ages
• II—The Eastern Mediterranean from Constantine the Great to Süleyman the Magnificent – combining late antique, Byzantine and early Ottoman studies
• III—History of Medieval Religion, Philosophy, and Science – for those wishing to pursue medieval intellectual history
• IV—Material Culture of the Middle Ages – for the materially minded, comprising art history, archaeology, archaeozoology, codicology, historical anthropology, &c.
