Core Areas
In order to allow our students to focus on those aspects of late antique, medieval, and early modern history closest to their interests, we invite successful MA and PhD applicants to join one of four departmental core areas in research and teaching:
- I—Western, Eastern and Central European History of the Middle Ages – catering for the political and cultural history of the 'Latin' Middle Ages
- II—The Eastern Mediterranean from Constantine the Great to Süleyman the Magnificent – combining late antique, Byzantine and early Ottoman studies
- III—History of Medieval Religion, Philosophy, and Science – for those wishing to pursue medieval intellectual history
- IV—Material Culture of the Middle Ages – for those wishing to study art history, archaeology, archaeozoology, codicology, historical anthropology, &c.
